What affects the inspection price

Four factors determine what you'll pay for a pre-purchase inspection in Brisbane.

Vehicle type

Sedans and hatchbacks are the base rate. SUVs, 4WDs, and utes involve more surface area, higher underbody, and sometimes additional drivetrain complexity — workshops price accordingly.

In-workshop vs mobile

In-workshop inspections use a full hoist and are the faster option. Mobile inspections require the mechanic to travel to the car's location and work without hoist access — this typically adds to the cost.

Which workshop you book

Each AAPPI workshop sets its own prices. Workshop prices vary based on their overheads, location, and the scope of their inspection service. AAPPI shows the price on every workshop's profile page before you commit.

Vehicle age and condition

Some workshops may charge more for high-kilometre or older vehicles that require more time to inspect properly. This is disclosed at the time of booking where it applies.

Is a pre-purchase inspection worth the cost?

The inspection costs far less than a surprise mechanical fault after purchase. Three ways it pays for itself.

Finding a major mechanical fault

An engine or transmission fault on a used car can cost $3,000–$10,000+ to repair. A $199 inspection that finds the fault before you buy saves far more than it costs.

Negotiating a lower price

Even a clean inspection report gives you objective evidence to negotiate with the seller. Minor items the mechanic flags — worn tyres, brake pads, a service overdue — are commonly used to negotiate hundreds off the asking price.

Buying with confidence

When the report comes back clear, you know you're buying with accurate information, not the seller's description. That peace of mind has real value when you're spending tens of thousands on a used car.

How AAPPI shows prices

AAPPI does not set a single price for all workshops. Each approved workshop on the platform sets its own inspection rates. When you browse workshops in Brisbane, you see each workshop's prices before entering any booking details.

  • Price shown on every workshop profile before you book
  • No price changes or supplements after the inspection (unless disclosed upfront)
  • Workshops set their own rates — AAPPI does not add hidden platform fees to the displayed price
  • You pay through AAPPI at booking — not directly to the workshop

Pricing FAQ

How much does a pre-purchase inspection cost in Brisbane?+

A standard pre-purchase inspection in Brisbane starts from $199 for a sedan or hatchback. SUVs, 4WDs, and utes start from $199. Mobile inspections (mechanic travels to the car) start from $199. These are guide prices — each workshop on AAPPI sets and displays its own exact pricing before you book.

Is the price on AAPPI fixed or just a quote?+

The price shown on each workshop's AAPPI profile page is what you pay at booking. It is not a quote that changes after the inspection. The only exception is if a workshop discloses a higher rate for specific vehicle types at booking time — this is shown before you confirm.

Do I pay upfront or after the inspection?+

You pay at the time of booking through AAPPI. The workshop receives the funds after the inspection is completed and the report is delivered. You do not pay the workshop directly.

What if the car doesn't pass — do I get a refund?+

The inspection fee covers the mechanic's time and the report — it applies whether the car passes or has problems found. If the car fails and you decide not to buy, that's the inspection doing exactly what it's supposed to do. AAPPI's refund policy applies where a booking is cancelled before the inspection begins.

Is a cheaper inspection from a regular mechanic just as good?+

It depends on what you get. A pre-purchase inspection from AAPPI uses a standardised 200+ point digital checklist, photos on every flagged item, and a structured PDF report — the same format every time. An informal "look over" from a mechanic who doesn't use a standardised checklist may miss items or deliver a verbal report with no documentation. Price matters less than scope and format.

Is a Queensland Safety Certificate cheaper — can I use that instead?+

A Queensland Safety Certificate (roadworthy) is a narrow legal check required to transfer ownership. It covers basic lights, brakes, tyres, and body items. It does not check the engine, transmission, suspension depth, electrical systems, or perform a road test. A pre-purchase inspection is a much broader assessment. They serve different purposes — you often want both.

Do mobile inspections cost more?+

Yes. Mobile inspections include travel time and cost, and the mechanic works without hoist access. Mobile inspections in Brisbane start from $199, compared to from $199 for an in-workshop inspection. Mobile is the right choice when the seller won't release the car to a workshop.
